Heartburn and some fruits acidity

Monday, August 20th, 2007

I was playing with different smoothies recently to figure out what works and what doesn’t work for me. So here is my list:

Milk, banana, protein - no heartburn but taste is so-so…

Milk, banana - no heartburn - but it is just a banana… Boring!

Milk, banana, strawberry - no heartburn and tastes very nice

Milk, banana, strawberry, peach - don’t overdo with peach, it can add nice taste pattern but also can cause minor heartburn. So experiment here.

Milk, peach, strawberry - risky one. But still worth a try if you don’t like banana. Try to start small on peach since it is quite acid.

I want to try to add some kiwi to my smoothies since they taste delicious. But they are the most acidic (not counting lemon probably)…

If you see any of the smoothies causing you constant heartburn stop it and try a trusted “no heartburn” one. Then slowly add very tiny pieces of fruit you like and see what happens.

Experiment and you’ll find it!

Smoothie a day will keep your heartburn away!

Sunday, August 5th, 2007

For a week or so I’m torturing my blender and stomach with different smoothie combinations to see if my heartburn likes them. Today I took some time and wrote one recipe down and took a picture for you. This recipe causes zero heartburn for me and I hope it will be the same for you.

So here is my favourite smoothie recipe:

What to do if fruits are causing heartburn?

Monday, July 30th, 2007

This is a usual problem for all heartburn sufferers. No acid, no acid, no acid… But what if I want that strawberry, raspberry or orange in my diet?!?!

And how can you imagine living the rest of your life without eating fruits? Well there is a trick which can help you to get your vitamins without pills. (more…)

Apple Cider Vinegar and Heartburn

Monday, April 23rd, 2007

I was always wondering how does very acidic drink can cure heartburn which is caused by acid and LES dysfunction? Usually vinegar supporters claim that it helps by increasing acidity in the stomach. But won’t it hurt inflamed esophagus? Isn’t drinking lemon juice going to give the same effect. It is just slightly more acidic then vinegar according to http://www.manageyourheartburn.com/foodhb.php

Here is a quote from an article I recently posted on my web site at http://www.manageyourheartburn.com/articleview.php?ArticleID=13

“Claims of apple cider vinegar’s effectiveness are anecdotal at best. It’s rarely been tested methodically, the way a drug would be, simply because that kind of research is usually funded by pharmaceutical companies and apple cider vinegar isn’t a pharmaceutical product so of no interest to them. The companies that could benefit from it being proven effective don’t have the money to fund the kind of research required.”

“And there is the possibility that it actually does work for some people. As mentioned, different remedies work for different people when it comes to GERD. It’s hard to cite any one cure as THE best option in every case. The point is, don’t pin all your hopes on a folk remedy whose usefulness is anecdotal and unproven.”

So read it and decide for yourself…

Baking soda for heartburn?

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

Will baking soda work for heartburn or not? Yeah it will but only for a very short time. In response to alkaline environment created by baking soda your stomach will try to produce more acid which will then cause even more pain.

So use it only when it really hurts badly. Otherwise try some warm water to dilute acid. It is a longer term solution.

Gerd pillow/wedge

Sunday, February 11th, 2007

I tried wedge pillow a while ago when I had severe heartburn. Did it help me? Yes, a bit. But in case of severe heartburn it won’t make that much difference.

Biggest problem with it is that you can’t sleep very well. Your blood goes to your legs and your sleep quality significantly decreases. So try it but don’t think about it as a long term solution. PPIs usually provide much better relief. And if you combine it with other remedies described on this site you can get rid of it once and for all!

More stuff that works for me - you probably would never guessed what is it

Tuesday, October 24th, 2006

Let me give you some more food to try. Hopefully this will help you heartburn. This is the only food out of milk family which works wonders for me. It is cottage and farmer cheese. Note that you have to select non-acid cottage and farmer cheese. Cottage cheese is usually non-acid (especially when you eat with some fruits or jam). But select farmer cheese with carefulness - sometimes it is a bit acid and may cause heartburn. (more…)

Honey - does it help?

Monday, October 23rd, 2006

Several sites on the internet claim that honey is a cure for heartburn. Is it? It never actually worked for me. It looks like honey is being marketed by some people as cure for everything. It doesn’t though. I don’t want to say that it isn’t a great food and very healthy one. But I wouldn’t make a drug out of it.Though if you want to try - go with natural honey. What you see in most grocery stores isn’t a real honey. Usually it is either artificial or pasteurized. Well it is clear that artificial honey won’t help you at all. As for pasteurized one the process of pasteurization warms honey to certain temperature to kill bacteria. The problem with that approach is that most of minerals and chemicals which honey is famous for break down in this temperature. And honey becomes just a sugar after this.So if you really want to try real honey go to the farmer’s market or Whole Foods and look for raw honey.

Reducing incidences of your heartburn

Monday, October 23rd, 2006

Tried to recap couple of things that helped me to bring heartburn under some form of control:- I stopped eating too late. Well it was hard but it is the most effective one. Now if I eat late I don’t go to bed approximately 2 hours after that. Sometimes that could be hard - but I know that if I break this rule I will have bad taste in my mouth next morning. And if I do this couple weeks in a row my heartburn occurences will jump- Stopped eating acid food at all. Before I tended to try it from time to time to check if it would work. But after some experiments I know that “it won’t work” at least for now. It is interesting that story is pretty much the same as with eating late. If you GERD is under control it won’t hurt to have something acid once. But if you keep doing it then it will get back…
